Some of the religious places in Mangalore.

CHURCHES

Aloysius chapel.

Interior of the chapel.

ST. ALOYSIUS CHURCH :
This church is situated just 1 km from the city bus stand, it is few steps from the Light House hill.
This church was built  way back in the year 1900. The main  attraction of this church is the beautiful paintings of an artist named Anthony Moshaini from Italy. It is a architectural gem of Mangalore and often compared to the Sistine Chapel in Rome. One should not miss the beautiful paintings brushed on every inch of the wall and ceiling of the church. Behind the church there is St. Aloysius Church.
The central row of paintings on the wall depicts the life of Aloysius Gonzaga to whom the college ad the Church is dedicated. The rest of the painting shows the birth and life of Jesus from the day he was born to his crucification. This is indeed a masterpiece painting.

When i asked my dad to describe this chapel he said only one word "Awesome", it made a complete justice to this beautiful chapel, my dad was an aloysian student he told that he used to visit this chapel everyday while he was a student there.

MILAGRES CHURCH

Milagres Church, South Canara (Portuguese: Igreja dos Milagres, English: Church of Our Lady of Miracles) was built in 1680 by Bishop Thomas De Castro, a Theatine priest of Salcette, Goa. The Church was then built at the site of the present cemetery. The 16th century marks an important event in the history of the community, as conversion to Christianity by Portuguese influence waned. The Christians had moved further south to Kanara but they lacked priestly leadership, as many of the priests returned to Goa when the Portuguese withdrew. In 1658, a Carmelite missionary visited the Kanara Christians and reported their plight to Rome.
This church is very close to my grandparents place in mangalore, i like to visit this church during Christmas time as it is filled with vibrant colours and especially the crib made by them is just amazing, its a must visit when visiting mangalore.

INFANT JESUS CHURCH

INFANT JESUS CHURCH

This church dedicated to Infant Jesus of Prague, was built in 1996 in the form of a crown. The church is situated on Carmel hill at Bikarnakatta, Mangalore-Karkala road, 4 Kms. from the city centre. Thousands of pilgrims, from all over India, irrespective of their caste, come to this church and pray for all their needs.Devotion to Infant Jesus was originally started by the Discalced Carmelites in the city of Prague of Czech republic in the year 1628. In 1956, the Belgian Carmelites who were working in Mangalore, brought a beautiful statue of Infant Jesus from the U.S. and began this devotion. This statue is the focus of devotion for all pilgrims.

These are the beautiful places to be visited, i visit these place when ever i go to mangalore. I like the Infant Jesus Shrine as it is very beautiful and it has a calm surrounding.

TEMPLES

The Mangaladevi Temple (in full: Mahatobhara Shree MangalaDevi Temple) is a Hindu temple at Bolara in the city of Mangalore, India, situated about three km southwest of the city centre. The name Mangalore is derived from Goddess Mangaladevi, the main deity of the temple. The name Mangalore is the Anglicised version, since in Kannada it is called Mangalooru. It translates as Mangala-Ooru or Mangala's town.

The Gokarnatah Temple is about 2 Kms from the city centre, this temple is the house of Lord Gokarnatha. This temple has a very short past, founded by the Billawa Community of Mangalore this temple belongs to era of modern architecture. The original temple structure was in Kerala style, which was replaced, by Chola style during recent renovation in 1991. The main deity of the temple is Lord Sri Gokarnanatha (another form of Lord Shiva). Navarathri Utsava (Dasara festival) is very famous and is one of the main tourist events in this temple. A grand procession of Goddess Durga takes place during this festival, which attracts many tourists and devotees from distance corners of the state and is very admired like Mysore Dasara.
This is one of the beautiful temples in mangalore.

The Kadri Manjunatha Temple located in Mangalore in the state of Karnataka, India, dates back to approximately 1068 The square temple built with nine water tanks, nestles at the foot of the highest hill at Kadri in Mangalore. The chief deity of this temple is Manjunatha there is a shiv ling on him there is also a ( thri Lokeshwara statue made of bronze. The temple is a neat middle sized structure with a pyramid-shaped roof. The temple, as the inscription indicates, may have been built in the 10th or 11th century, as evidenced by the installation of the Lokeshwara statue in the 968. The Balipitha in front of the temple also gives us an almost definite period going back to 10th century. Within the temple premises to the west is the temple of Goddess Durga, and to the north the temple of Lord Ganesha.

MOSQUE

The Ullal darga famous for Uroos fair has an interesting history behind its presence. Located about 10 kms from the heart of the city the darga is easily accessible by buses, auto-rickshaws ans taxis.
The Dargah to commemorate Saint Sayyid Mohammed Shareeful Madani, located in Ullal in South Kanara, has been drawing pilgrims from all faiths. Legend has it that about 400 years ago, Sayyid Muhammed Shareeful Madani came to Mangalore from Saudi Arabia, reaching the shores of Ullal by floating on a piece of cloth. He became famous among the villagers because of his kindness and his treatment of the sick through prayers. Many miracles have been credited to this saint and to this day, people from all communities come to Ullal mosque to seek his blessings.
